Different Grades of Teflon Tape

Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) guidelines point out, the pipe sealant should use all threaded fittings, Teflon tape is such a sealant. Teflon tape is also commonly referred to as PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) tape (Teflon is a DuPont brand name owned), or simply “thread tape.” Thread tape is easy to use, and helps lubricate the nipple, because they are connected in addition to forming a tight seal.
There are various grades of tape. Your choice will depend on pipe fittings tape features you use, the nature, types and combinations.

Role pipeline
Your use of the tape grade will be partially functional seal piping will be determined by you. The main types of pipes will carry hot or cold water, fuel oil or natural gas. For the oxygen line, thread tape must be free of grease, so as not to burn. Thread tape is not suitable for vacuum or compressed air systems.

Pipeline nature
You select the tape level will determine the nature of the junction. A permanent joint will be part of the house or building infrastructure, such as water or a main gas pipeline, and will require little or no maintenance. Semi-permanent joint will need routine maintenance joints, such as the kitchen or bathroom plumbing. Thread tape is ideal for semi-permanent joint, and pipe sealant will be permanent joint better choice.

Category Pipe and Fittings
Tape thread sealant for threaded preferred as plastic parts, because there is little risk of a chemical reaction. Works well on metal parts also thread tape, because its role is to lubricate metal threads into a tight fit and seal. Threaded pipe thread tape should be wrapped in a direction to form the tightest seal.

With the grade, color and density
Thread tape have different colors, different purposes.

White tape is intended for single-density and an inch or less 3/8 pipes. It can sometimes be in a silver color that matches the pipe was found.

Cumbersome triple density, half-inch pipe to two inches in diameter. It is designed for pipes with larger joints, such as water distribution pipes. Note that the container is red, but the tape itself looks pink.

Yellow belt is double density, and design for gas and fuel pipelines.

Green belt is grease and oil, and specifically for the pipeline to carry oxygen.

Please note that these reference indexes with color in the United States only.

Tape Specifications
Thread tape should be a minimum thickness of 3.5 mils, with 99 percent of the minimum purity of PTFE, and able to withstand extreme range from 550 degrees to 450 degrees Fahrenheit or less zero.
